iggy and lola

15 Dec

Martin’s grandmother passed away this year on July 7th. She was 99 years old and one of the shortest and feistiest women I have ever met.

We miss her terribly but take comfort in the fact that she died on her own terms, in her house and in her own time. She really wouldn’t have it any other way.

Although she loved Margot and often offered her money, she has a special thing with boys and really took to Iggy. Here’s a video of her and Iggy about 3 months before she died. It’s under 2 minutes, but says everything about their relationship.

songs to sing and learn

6 Apr

Iggy’s current favorite songs are:

“dancing clean” for Dancing Queen by Abba

“bay ca sin” for Vacation by the Go-go’s

“mountain” for Nature Anthem by Grandaddy.

“moon” for Killing Moon by Echo and the Bunnymen.

Margot is going through a Beach Boys phase now, so it’s “Don’t Worry Baby”, “Surfer Girl”, and “Surfing USA” on constant repeat. I guess it’s better than her Sound of Music phase, which towards the end, made me want to gouge my eyes out.

sandwriting

Writing her name in the sand for the first time. With her off-hand even! Xmas day, 2011. Encinitas, CA.

I don’t know why, but this kills me every time I watch it. Guess I’m a sentimental sap.

anyone who knows me knows that i HATE HATE HATE throwing a kid’s party. that is why i have avoided it for so long. i don’t understand children. i don’t know what they like, how they think, etc. i mean, i know how MY kids are, but a gathering of children literally frightens me.

and, i’ve been to so many parties where it looks like martha stewart planned it. although i walk away thoroughly impressed and slightly jealous, i personally don’t have any interest in spending the time or money. i am lazy. i don’t want to give out goodie bags. i don’t want to decorate. but at the same time, i don’t want people to think my kid’s party is the shittiest one they’ve ever been to.

martin put his foot down and said that this year we had to throw margot her first kid party. he said he would take care of everything which of course means, he wouldn’t.

i bitched and moaned through the ENTIRE process. thankfully, hazel was there to hold my hand to and help me understand what is expected and blah blah blah.

anyway, we invited about 5 kids and their parents over. we made english muffin pizzas, showed them how to take pictures with the polaroid camera, made christmas wreaths, and at the end, martin threw a whole bunch of toys in the driveway and let the kids have at it.

but when the cake came out margot had the BIGGEST smile on her face and she was so excited that all these people were singing happy birthday to her that i guess it was all worth it.

she also had a party at her school (dang kids’ parties get expensive) which she was really happy about as well.

i still refuse to do it EVERY year, but maybe every 5 years she’ll get a party where she can invite people not related to her.

special thanks to martin wong for all the pictures and to hazel for doing the crafts with the kids!
